What is the line between reality and staging in documentary filmmaking?
The 4th meeting of the “Ethnographic Filmmaking. Training and Memory” – 2nd edition workshop was held on April 14. It was the last lesson dedicated to the area of Research and Ideation. On this occasion, trainer Stefano Petti talked with the students about the different nuances that the relationship between reality and staging can take on in documentary filmmaking.
Starting from his experience with his documentaries “Fatti Corsari” and “Bombelvis,” the trainer shed light on fundamental elements of the filmmaking process: the relationship with the protagonists, the reconstruction of reality and the different styles with which a story can be told.
The work team thus had the opportunity to grapple with a wide range of possibilities and creative processes, from which to draw in taking the first steps of the project that is slowly taking shape.
