Storytelling through Images – Photography Lessons

As part of the workshop Ethnographic Filmmaking. Education and Memory – II Edition, three meetings of the Photography area were held between the last weeks of May and the first week of June.
Trainer Lorenzo Casadio introduced the students to the subject with an overview of the fundamentals of photography, starting with the basic parameters and reflecting on their narrative and linguistic uses. Together, they dialogued on the substantial differences between the static image and the dynamic image, identifying the role of photography in cinematic storytelling.

Combining practice and theory, in the spirit of the workshop, Lorenzo accompanied the work team along the first approaches with the camera. The students then experimented with the different languages and results that can be achieved using different optics.
As a final meeting, the trainer coordinated the students in a field trip: dividing into two small teams each practiced their set roles. The teams, rotating, interfaced to explore the operational and communication differences between using the still camera and the handheld camera.

With Lorenzo’s help, the students got into the swing of things, and step by step they are advancing toward the shooting of the documentary project.
