“Ethnographic Filmmaking”: Writing Sessions
As part of the workshop Ethnographic Filmmaking. Training and Memory – 2nd edition, three meetings with Andrea Piretti, trainer of the Writing area, were held in recent weeks at the Nelson Mandela Library.
The dialogue between the working group and the trainer started from the analysis of the first drafts of the subjects written by the participants. The goal set for the first approaches to film writing was from the outset to identify the narrative key with which a story is to be told, so that it can be made clear and visible.
Andrea introduced the team to the different steps in the process of writing a documentary film, which are essential to bring a project to life: from the concept to the more in-depth and structuring phases of a story, the treatment and the screenplay.
The students then worked on the stories encountered in the research field and proposed in the classroom, proceeding with the identification of the narrative mechanisms useful to develop them. Indispensable references are, for example: the three-act structure, the paradigm and the arc of a character’s transformation through conflicts and goals.

The storytelling tools and methodologies learnt in these three weeks will be invaluable throughout the next training areas.
